Design Competition: Functional Urban Art Installation ''STRAWBERRY''

Call for proposals for the creation of a functional urban art object in Asari Park

Jūrmala Municipality announces a design competition for a new functional urban art installation in the park near the Asari railway station. The functional urban art installation should symbolise the historical occupation of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood - strawberry cultivation - and should comply with the principles of the New European Bauhaus for sustainable, inclusive design that promotes community participation. Ideas can be developed and submitted until January 3, 2025.
Designers, architects, artists and other professionals are invited to create proposals for an functional urban art installation that, by its uniqueness, would strengthen the cultural memory of the city and highlight the special role of the Asari neighbourhood in Jūrmala history.
The strawberry fields have become one of city Jūrmala legends. Strawberries, including the special local variety 'Viktorija', have even travelled from the gardens of the local inhabitants to the markets of St Petersburg. When the Riga-Tukums railway line opened in 1877, a strawberry collection point was established in the area of the Asari station. For the hard-working young Latvians, the tenants and owners of the plots, the strawberry fields provided work and a livelihood in the summers. A strawberry-growing culture was established, which was alive until the early 1990s, when the aromatic berries grown in the gardens of Jūrmala could still be bought at the markets.
The functional urban art installation will be located near the Asari railway station in Asari Park, with seating benches, a picnic table, table tennis, exercise equipment, a basketball hoop, a water refilling spring and a rain garden. The functional urban art installation "Strawberry" is planned as the visual centre of the park.
The jury will assess the concept's relevance to the theme, aesthetic quality and effect on the urban environment, functionality, sustainable design solutions in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus, and technological solutions. The total prize fund for the competition is EUR 5 000.
